Bringing together a collective wealth of expertise, Rehab Lab Team has built a strong reputation for providing comprehensive, client-focused care. Muhd Fadhli, Founder and Chief Physiotherapist, leads the clinic with an ethos of empowerment through movement. Elizabeth Lee, Lorrian Lim and the rest of the team provide a holistic approach that addresses all aspects of wellness, enabling clients to flourish physically, emotionally and mentally.

The lab has been awarded $1.1 million from the National Science Foundation for a project called Semi-Automated Rehabilitation at Home (SARAH) to develop breakthrough technology and methods that will connect stroke survivors with physical therapy at home through tele-rehabilitation. The SARAH system will use a fused knowledge base of human and machine learning to evaluate patients during training, daily activities at home and report summary data back to the therapist — all without requiring a live session.

Inside the Rehab Lab Team: Working Together for Your Healing

The device, which would be worn like a watch or a bracelet, will use three components: motion tracking that measures movements; electrical impedance tomography (EIT), an imaging technique that assesses muscles by measuring the electrical activity of their fibers; and a virtual reality headset and tracking suit that allows patients to see themselves in action and guide their recovery alongside a therapist, all while they perform exercises. The research brings together expertise from across Virginia Tech – including the Smart Rehab Lab, Alan Asbeck’s Assistive Robotics Laboratory, the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, and the Interactive Neurorehabilitation Laboratory. It also includes a cellular-based infrastructure being developed by Wireless@VT and Pittsburgh-based Lifeware Labs, as well as collaboration with Carilion Clinic to test the hardware.
