In the case of mushrooms sold as “brain-health” gummies, that claim may be misleading. UVA Poison Center experts say the gummies made five people sick in Salem, Lynchburg, and Charlottesville, and tests found they contained the illegal hallucinogens psilocybin and psilocin. Those chemicals are found in magic mushrooms (Amanita muscaria) and are considered psychedelics, which means they’re banned under federal law.
Symptoms of eating the gummies included seizures, vomiting, and hallucinations. All but one of the adults treated at the UVA Emergency Department had ingested the gummies intentionally, while the young child consumed two accidentally. Those hospitalized were treated and released, but they could have experienced more severe symptoms, such as a racing heartbeat or altered state. The gummies, from the brand Uncle Frog, also were contaminated with the psychoactive cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, from cannabis plants. That’s not detected by typical hospital drug screens, but is illegal under state laws. The company says it’s voluntarily recalling its Cordyceps and Lion’s Mane Mushroom Gummies.
